For me, the primary reason for lack of confidence is a lack of knowledge on a topic. Generally, it is an unknown or new activity, and until I know more about it, I tend to lack confidence. My resolve tends to be directly related to my motivation. How about you, what did you come up with as your main reasons for having a lack of confidence or resolve? In my cases, when I lack knowledge or when something is new or unknown, I do my homework. I look it up, I ask around, and gain confidence in this manner. I try to find things with which I am familiar which have some similarities, and use that to gain confidence as well.

In the worst case, I just do it, and plan to learn from the experience, like skydiving. If I get it in my head that I will do something, it will eventually get done. But when I have motivation, when I have a reason to make sure I follow through, I have a great deal of resolve. I hope you will be able to find methods that help you move past the things that are holding back your confidence or resolve.

Keep at it, as there will always be another part of your life where you could use a little more. FamousWomen , head , Helen Keller , high , never. If you are depressed, you are living in the Past. If you are anxious, living in the future. We lazy-eyed folk come in many shapes and sizes.

My strabismus first showed itself around age two, which is around the age when the condition often chooses to manifest itself, though my orthoptist thinks, in my case, it was a reaction to chemotherapy from childhood leukemia. My left eye once pointed inward, but after two early corrective surgeries, it began drifting out. The folks over at Guinness World Records could immortalize it as the longest, saddest game of Pong ever played. Navigating life behind my eyes is like being a cameraman with two lenses to shoot with.

I only see out of one at a time but can quickly switch between them. Not all lazy eyes, however, are made equal. Some people have less severe misalignments that are more difficult to spot; others experience chronic double vision. And the reasons for realignment surgery vary. The resulting double vision can prevent patients from working, so surgery becomes necessary.

To say I perceive the world differently than most is an understatement.

I begged my parents and even bought a stuffed Patrick Star plush in preparation. But when, in the opening scene, a pirate jumps out towards you, leaving his usual picture frame, I looked left, away from the screen, wondering why others reacted with such surprise. My hand tends to end up drenched in ketchup under condiment dispensers. Learning to play catch with my baseball-obsessed father was a field of nightmares.

And, from a young age, I was told by health care professionals to strike careers such as airline pilot or surgeon off my list.

None of this will be fixed by surgery. The knowledge had stirred something deep inside. My eyes were suddenly wide open. Before then, I had always believed I had no choice but to accept how I looked. It was only when I learned change was possible that I began obsessing over how people viewed me. My anxiety over my appearance began to skyrocket. And it was only this year, as I searched for details on the surgery, that I realized how many lonely, lopsided, lost souls like me were out there. I found a whole community of YouTubers with the same anxieties I have.

They discussed dating, wearing their hair to cover one eye, their frustrations with being photographed, and the fear and anticipation surrounding their own upcoming surgeries. Scrolling through the videos, I felt like any other internet surfer finding others like themselves. Growing up, I was the only person I knew with misaligned eyes. Eye contact feels like an activity that requires two full sets, and when I try to engage in it, I feel like a pretender, some outsider improperly adopting the customs of the locals. Not all of my research led to positive reinforcement.

Around the same time, I also joined a Facebook support group for any and all problems related to strabismus. I was searching for information about alignment surgery to see if those with the condition believed it to be worthwhile. Comments there only confirmed what I had already suspected: eye surgery can be tricky and unpredictable, and people who have it done react differently. In some cases, only time will tell if the eye stays in place. In most cultures around the world, crying is considered to be caused by an extreme experience of emotion; usually, it's associated with sadness or grief, though often extreme experiences of happiness , and through humor, can cause us to cry.

Often, forced crying in order to gain sympathy or deceive others is known as "crocodile tears" - an expression from myths of crocodiles 'crying' when catching prey. Aside from our instinctive need to blink, our emotions and feelings towards the person we're talking to can cause us to subconciously alter our blink rate.

Blinking more than the average times per minute see right can be a good indicator that a person is attracted to the person they're talking to, and is for this reason used as a sign of flirting. Men and women blink at roughly the same rate as each other - between 6 and 10 times per minute in a normal setting. Additionally, animals such as tortoises are known to blink at different times with each eye. In the West, we consider winking to be a cheeky form of flirting - something we do with people that we know or are on good terms with. However, there are cross-cultural variations on the issue of winking: some Asian cultures frown up on the use of this form of facial expression.

What does the direction that someone looking in tell us about what they're thinking or feeling? Well, probably just what they're looking at. The thing to look out for is the direction someone's eyes are looking in when they're thinking. Looking to their left indicates that they're reminiscing or trying to remember something. On the other hand, looking to their right indicates more creative thoughts, and this is often interpreted as a potential sign that someone may be being deceitful in some situations, i.

From the findings above, what's the best way to convey a "positive you" using eye contact? If you want to show you're interested in what someone has to say, make eye contact often, but remember that unblinking stares are disconcerting. Instead, they focus on the eyes for two to three minutes, then move down to the nose or lips, then back up to the eyes. Occasionally, they look down to the table momentarily, then back up to the eyes.

Avoid looking up and to the right - it's a universal symbol of boredom and dismissal. Also remember the following key points with regards to eye contact:. Demonstrate that you're interested and active in interacting with someone by maintaining regular intervals of eye contact , but remember that contant eye contact can be intimidating. Pupil dilation can indicate someone is interested; it could, alternatively, be that the room has become brighter.
